Abusers often fail to understand what they’re victim is going through. Whether that victim is a significant other or a child, it still hurts the same. It’s devastating to be abused, especially by someone you love.
MEMPHIS, Tennessee – A mother called herself disciplining her child, causing the 10-year-boy to commit suicide.
Robin McKinzie is charged with aggravated child abuse and endangerment after her 10-year-old son died Saturday afternoon from a self-inflicted knife wound, police said.
When paramedics arrived, they found the boy unresponsive and bleeding from the chest.
Jaheim McKinzie, 10, was rushed to a local hospital, but was pronounced dead an hour later.
Police said McKinzie told first responders she was whipping her son with an extension cord and choking him as a form of discipline when the child became angry.
She said he ran into the kitchen, grabbed a knife, and stabbed himself in the chest.
McKinzie’s family says the boy had been acting out at school and had known mental health challenges.
Her sister, Tonya Bailey, says McKinzie needed help with her son and claims the boy had been off his medication and suicidal.
Bailey is asking the community to not judge her family.
“Just lift her up and that’s all that you need to do is pray and ask God to move on this situation and let the truth be known, and that God give her strength because he was only 10 years old,” Bailey said.
‘All I can say is that she was a good mother, and her son was her life,’ said a close friend of McKinzie’s who did not want to be identified. ‘Her son was her life.’
Robin McKinzie is held on a $100,000 bond.
Perhaps the little boy was thinking “If you’re going to keep hurting me, I may as well hurt myself, so you can stop”.
